With the 64th overall pick in the 2021 draft, the final pick in the 2nd round, the Green Bay Packers select QB Martin Teague from Boston College!
That was the moment that changed the Packers future at QB and future of the franchise. The Packers have had a lot of great QB’s in their teams history including Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers who have dominated the league for the last nearly 3 decades. The question always surrounded the front office of “will we find the next guy?”.
A lot of teams coveted QB Charlie Olson from Texas A&M and the Packers knew they would now pick high enough to select him. The Packers scouted the Boston College QB extremely hard and felt he could be the best QB in the draft when it was all said and done. Teague was only 21 years old, had a rocket arm and that gun slinger mentality that you want in a QB.
Teague had an up and down Junior season but felt that the QB draft class was weak and decided to declare early. Teague proceeded to not test well at the combine but the Packers saw what they liked. Tom Brady didn’t test well in which he fell to the 6th round and we all have seen how that turned out. The Packers had 4 picks in the the top 2 rounds. With the 14th pick they selected S Lamichael Hayden from South Carolina, with the 15th pick they selected DE Jeremiah Bingham from Penn St and with the 46th pick they selected LB DeAndre Childs from Georgia. At pick 64, the Packers had their guy fall into their laps and selected Teague.
Day 1 of mini camp started and Teague lit the field on fire. Coach Lefluer was impressed with the rookie QB’s poise, leadership and command of the offense. Day 1 told Coach Lefluer that there was going to be a battle for the starting QB spot with Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers has already won multiple SB’s but was on the decline with a very high cap number in his years remaining on contract.
Coach Lafluer gave Teague all of the preseason reps in which he led the team to a 4-0 record and led the league in all passing categories. Coach Lafluer had a tough decision to make after the preseason concluded. Coach Lafluer brought in both Rodgers and Teague to discuss the seasons plan with them. At that time, Coach Lafluer told them both that Teague would be the teams starting QB for the 2022 season.
Teague was thankful and honored to have been named the starting QB for a prestigious franchise which just came off of a SB Championship. Rodgers was frustrated but knows its a business. Rodgers told Lafluer that he would not coach or teach Teague anything and that the rookie would have to be on his A game all season. Not too many Coaches would bench a HOF QB for a 2nd rookie QB after a SB win…
Coach Lafluer believes in Teague and believes that he can be the next Packers legendary QB. So far in the 2022 season, Teague has led the Packers to the number 1 offense. Teague has completed over 70% of his passes, is number 2 in passer rating, passed for 1200 yards and has a 14/5 TD to INT ratio. Teague is proving to everyone in the building that Coach Lafluer made the right decision and hopes to lead the Packers to back to back SB wins!
Will Teague be the next legendary Packers QB in likes of Starr, Favre and Rodgers?
